July and August are popular times for the locals to go on holiday as well, which is why you should definitely book your campsite far enough in advance, especially if you’re planning on camping in the Algarve region. This way, you’re guaranteed to have a pitch, and you won’t have to go out hunting for one once you get there.
Unfortunately, it’s not always possible to fill gas cylinders from other parts of Europe while in Portugal. CEPSA and Repsol petrol stations offer cylinders for hire. Adapters are available there, too.
In addition to the classic toll booth, motorways with electronic toll collection have been in place since 2011. These routes are marked as “Electronic Toll Only”. Different payment methods apply depending on vehicle type and duration of stay. You can find more information here.
In Portugal, driving while talking on the phone without a hands-free device is prohibited. It’s particularly aggravating to take out 120 euros from your holiday funds to pay the fine. That money can be put to better use — for example, towards an extensive port wine tasting in Porto.
